When Should I Worry About a Cough?


 

Call our office if:

  • If your child is having trouble breathing or is working harder to breathe

  • If your child is breathing faster than normal

  • If your child has been coughing more than 3 weeks in a row; or the cough seems to be getting worse

  • If your child has a cough and develops a high fever (>102)

  • If your child is coughing up blood

  • If your child has severe coughing spasms

  • If your child sounds like they are wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing out)

  • If your child has a history of wheezing or asthma begin their “sick day” treatments as soon as cough develops

  • If your child makes a harsh/musical (called stridor) sound when breathing in during or after coughing

  • If your child is unable to keep down fluids

  • If your child is less than 3 months old and coughing
